My daughter's teacher stayed late again

Site Administrator · Albuquerque, NM · June 10, 2026

Dear Editor,

Ms. Ortega stays after school twice a week to help students who are learning English write college essays. My daughter Ana is one of them. Ana will be the first in our family to attend university, and she is terrified of the personal statement.

Ms. Ortega prints drafts, marks them in green ink, and tells Ana her story about crossing the border with her abuela is not "too much" for an admissions office. She says it is exactly what they need to hear.

Teachers like this are holding up more than classrooms. They are holding up futures. I hope we fund that work accordingly.

Gratefully,
Isabel Reyes
