Our block showed up when the pipes burst

Site Administrator · Detroit, MI · June 11, 2026

To the Editor,

When the water main on our street failed in January, city crews said it would be three days before permanent repairs. Three days in Michigan winter is a long time to live without running water.

By noon, neighbors had organized: bottled water on porches, a space heater in the church basement, an electrician rerouting a line so the duplex on the corner could share a temporary hookup. Nobody posted about it for clout. People just moved.

I moved here five years ago thinking I did not know anyone. Turns out knowing people is not always about time. Sometimes it is about showing up when the pipes burst.
